Talk to Strangers. Really

February 9, 2013 in [3WF] Kristen Hoosier

I had an awesome experience today with my Goer Missional Community (GMC) today.

What we do at least once a week is meet up with each other, pray for 1 hour for the nations and for the lost (those who don’t know God), and engage in conversation with and befriend at least one person.

Today, we met a young woman named Tong Li from China, and we succeeded. We sat at her table as strangers, and bid farewell as good friends less than an hour later =) We also began using a new strategy to engage in the lost of our community by literally finding girls sitting by themselves around campus and just asking if we can sit with them, and if they say yes, we do and just have this casual conversation where we genuinely get to know them! We also started saying, “Hey, I really hope you have a wonderful day!” to random people on the streets. We try to limit ourselves to girls mostly because guys will tend to take it in a different way, making things complicated. But back to the story~

Later on, my friends and I decided to go out to eat for dinner, and we headed on over to BJ’s, which has some very delicious meals at a decent price. After we had ordered our meals, one of my friends and I went to the bathroom to wash our hands, and after we had washed our hands in the bathroom, we both had to use the restrooms, so washing our hands was kind of pointless haha.

But here is where the magical moment happened. I went on to wash my hands once more, but this time, there was an elderly woman in her 60s at the sink between mine and my friend’s. Being in such a great mood, I decided to talk to her. I turned my head and said, “Hi ma’am! Are you enjoying your evening here?” The lady replied, “Oh yes! Do you work here?” She thought I worked there, that because I was so spontaneously kind to her, I must have worked there. But of course I answered, “No, I’m just here to eat haha.” And she commented, “Oh you’re just friendly!”

We both chuckled for a bit while turning our heads back to our respective sinks to continue washing our hands, but it wasn’t long before she started talking to me. Now take note of what you are about to read.

She looked at me, paused for a second, and tearily began, “You know, my husband and I are actually here because our mother-in-law is dying. She’s literally on her death bed. We just came out to have dinner, and you really just made my day.” And I could hear the soft sadness in her voice. My immediate reaction was to hug her, and I did. And as she rubbed my back warmly and made soft whimpering sounds, I knew that it was the right move.

We exchanged a few kind words before heading back to our respective tables, but when I told this story to my other friend at our table, we all decided to talk to this elderly couple and ask for their names so we could pray for them. Denise is married to Richard, whose mother Betty is in the hospital. At the lively age of 88, “she has lived a full, wonderful life,” as her son puts it.

So I really wanted to use this story to spark a genuine kindness in you guys. I pray that you begin engaging in conversations with strangers, because truly, you never know what a person is going through until you reach out to them. And it could make their day =)

Just Kidding. I don’t think anyone reads these anymore. I’m sure I’ll have something more meaningful to say in the future, but as of now… Have some air and invisible hugs :)

[Review] iHeartRadio show

September 6, 2012 in kennykulu

Here’s the whole concert. Watch it now if you haven’t do so!
(Thanks pikey so much for sharing it with us!)

As I’ve just watched that awesome mini-concert, I’m here to write a little review or like a little piece of article expressing my feelings (: BTW It feels so good to hear the girls singing and speaking in English! haha

I’m glad to hear some upbeat songs for the beginning. The girls’ LIVE singing skills for Nu Shoes was truly AWESOME as it’s compared to 777 WWT in Seoul (: And it’s cute for Sohee to have that little interaction during the introduction. haha

To move on, I was actually expecting that they sing the English version of Like This as I was told that the Korean MV was filmed with a high-pitch Eng version of the song. But though it’s understandable to sing the Korean one since it will be more familiar for the audience.

If you noticed the little moment at about 17:00, Sun swept for Sohee (: A little MinAhn sweet moment was spotted! (:

For Girls Girls, I’m glad that they brought out the meaning for the song since not everyone understands the Korean lyrics (: They don’t only bring music and fun for us but also deep meanings and blessings (: Not to mention that their LIVE skills are improved.

Yenny: … So … *silent*
*looks at Sohee*
*Sohee seems that that wasn’t her turn to speak*
How cute that moment was that haha <3

For their unreleased songs, I can only say that I LOVE IT!!!!

#OUCH Honestly, I was expecting that the song was an upbeat track at first. It turned out to be a truly nice ballad and it keeps growing on me. “Everybody’s looking for a little sweet touch, maybe I was looking forward a little too much.” This line is truly the BEST line for me. JYP did a nice job this time! Love it so much <3 I did cry just when the song got started. The song is perfect with the melody, lyrics, and the girls’ expression, it told a story.

#StayTogether Another well-written track from Ha;tfelt!! <3 Their accord for each other just brought the song to a much higher level, especially Yubin’s. <3

MIN SUNYE PARK YEEUN AHN SOHEE KIM YUBIN WOO HYERIM, I PROMISE TO STAY TOGETHER WITH YOU UNTIL THE WORLD ENDS.

(Put the line in the comment box if you promise to do so!)

Unofficial lyrics here :

[Yeeun]
I used to think, I was right

Want it all, the best~
I promised myself I’ll do anything to make~~ it happen
But now~~ I’m scared if I could
Make it right~~again after all
I’ve said I~~ never meant~ of all I could think of
is what we used to say

[Sunye]
Al~~ways~ stay together when we shine or rain

No matter the weather, we will stay~~
As long as we have each other~
Stay~~ Together~~

[Hyelim]
How many times~~ I stumbled and fell

[Sohee]
But each time~~

[EunAhn]
You were there for me~

[Sunye]
Holding my hands~~

And now I realized

[YooMin]
We could only make it through just because~~

[YeBin]
Always~~ stay together

[Yeeun]
When it shines or rains

[SoLim]
No matter the weather~

[2Ye]
We will stay~

As long as we have each other~

[YeBin]
Stay~~

[Yeeun]
Al~~ways

[2Ye]
Stay together when it shines or rains

[SoLim]
No matter the weather, we will

[Sunye]
Stay~~

As long as we have each other~
Stay~~

[YooMin]
Together~~

[Sohee]
Stay~~

[Yeeun]
Stay~~

A little side note, ‘Sohee marry me’ at the beginning was cute. XD

#WAKEUP It’s as cute as Nu Shoes! I would definitely wake up at once if it’s my morning caller ringtone. XD To be honest, I’ve already decided to buy the upcoming US album but these 3 songs strengthen my thought!! It deserves for our wait too! (:

The fan chant during Yubin’s solo dance part in Tell Me actually surprised me! It seems like Yubin is being loved in the US~kkkk

I was impressed by Yenny’s high note in 2Different Tears and Like Money! They must be so tired to dance all that long but Yenny still did a great job! <3

It’s cute that 2YeLim made mistakes during their speech XD It makes the show more livable instead of just saying everything remembered before~

Overall, the concert was amazing!! However, I do have a little complaint during ‘Like Money’. It’s a bit weird for the girls sing along with AKON’s voice…so…yeah…that’s the case.

No matter what, I did enjoy watching it and I’m sure the girls and the audience did so too!! <3 And it makes me to look forward to their US tour and album much much more!! CANT WAIT!!

BEST WISHES FOR THE ASIAN TOUR TOO!

SINGAPORE! R U READY? <3

Intro: In 2011, there were 67groups made their debut in Korea. 40 of them are girl groups. There’s almost a new girl group making debut every 2weeks.
The new waves are coming quickly, the speed of elimination is getting quicker, who can escape from the 5-year-only life?
The Wonder Girls, SNSD and KARA who lead the hallyu wave are passing their first 5-year since their debut to be the Korean’s best 3 girl groups. The formula of success and their past will be disconstructed now.

The main part of the interview:
In 2009, the song ‘Nobody’ made the Wonder Girls to be world-famous. It was good for them being on top, but then they left their safety zone entering the US market which has a bigger influence yet more suspicious.
They’re not doing magnifying, just appear on a small piece of the newspaper. Even the planned English full-length album is just around the corner…Finally, the album is confirmed to be released this year, the new single ‘Like Money’ found the American hip hop king, AKON to be featured. WG also went back to the concert stage after 3 years.
This time the 5 girls starts again after being well-equipped. The Wonder Power is coming again.

Q: The planned US full-length album is being postponed again and again. Waited for more than 3yrs, and you’re not even promoting in Korea, will you afraid of the decreasing of popularity?
SUN: We are so understand that popularity can’t last forever, so we didn’t afraid of losing our position in Korea when we enter the US market. But we received support from K-WFs continuously when we were there. We’re truly thankful for that.
YENNY: Sometimes in case of grabbing a higher target, you have to give up sth. We had strong wills to accept this challenge.
YUBIN: We won’t decide to promote overseas if we first afraid of the position in Korea. During the time of waiting, we were nervous, and it was a hard time. But for work, we’ll do our best and we will learn to enjoy at the moment. We learnt a lot in the US, it made us to grow up so much.
SOHEE: To me, promoting in the US is much more fun than being nervous. Cuz it’s a brand new experience.
LIM: I was so nervous when starting, but feeling excited about this unknown trip.

Q:The English album will be released soon, also you’ve made your debut last month in Japan. To master different languages, accepting difference between cultures, the most unforgettable thing is…
YUBIN: We’ve waited for this English album for so long. What we care the most is the pronunciation, so we keep learning and practicing so hard. I think it’s much happier that we can be close with fans despite of different lang than being famous.
YENNY: Yup, the hardest part is pronunciation. The difficuly of singing in English scores 8/10. (I’m) currently learning Japanese and Spanish.
SUN: It was hard at the beginning, but it’s getting better as (we) keep on practicing and learning.
SOHEE: (I’ve) taken Chinese class before and currently learning English and Japanese. I’ll try my best to learn the local language wherever we are.
LIM: In Japan, the most unforgettable thing is that many Japaneses wear weird clothing on the streets at daytime, that’s funny! They’re all sensitive at fashion and dressing with personal styles.

Q: Being in the US market for a while, when compared to Korea, what you love about the US market? What’s the difficulty?
SUN: The entertainment ‘system’ is different in both places. In Korea, rookies make their debut through TV programs to let the public to know them. Through tour is the way to strengthen your music career in the US. What I love most of the life in the US-especially in Manhattan, is that we can experience different cultures closely. Being in a country but you can try foods around the world…I can now understand why the US is called the ‘melting pot’ (That means it combines various cultures in a place.) Fun things including visiting Broadway to enjoy shows too.
SOHEE: It’s fun and fresh for me to tour the whole country for promotion.
LIM: US artists go on radios to promote, it’s different from Korean artists that go on TV music programs.
YUBIN: We also had chances to be the opening acts for concerts in the US. What we had learnt in the US can’t be experienced in Korea.
YENNY: Koreans treat the relationship between FDs and among families importantly, but Americans fight for freedom and showing off their own charm. However, it’s easy to understand.

Q: Tell us your experience about the collaboration with AKON about the song ‘Like Money’?
SUN: What surprised us is that he pays so much time to prepare for the performance.
YENNY: I’ve heard that AKON will prepare much for showing off different sides of himself for different shows. For a singer like him, we learnt a lot.
LIM: We’ve always been AKON’s fans, so the first stage to perform ‘Like Money’ is the most unforgettable.
SOHEE: We’ve had a meal with him when we were performing in Korea. He loves Korean food!
YUBIN: It’s surprising to know that he enjoys different spicy foods. I’m happy to work with him.

Q: YENNY and YUBIN worked for the production of the mini-album ‘Wonder Party’: YENNY composed ‘R.E.A.L.’ and ‘Girlfriend’; YUBIN wrote lyrics for ‘Hey Boy’. What will you want to challenge in the future?
YENNY: I’m hoping to try musicals, dramas(She means the one in the theater). Being a radio DJ will be fine for me too.
LIM: I’m hoping to write a autobiography called ‘The growth of a girl’!
YUBIN: I’m hoping to continue writing lyrics, keep on rapping. It might be fun if I can try acting.

Q: Being a group for 5yrs, the most wonderful moment is…
SUN: I think it’s unforgettable for every moment. We’ve just celebrated our 5th anniversary and 2000th days after debut. At the moment, I think it’s thankful that I can celebrating that day with members.
YENNY: The happiest and nicest moment, of course, it was the moment with fans at the concert.
SOHEE: I personally think that the days in the US is the most fantastic one. It was hard though, we had many great moments.

Q: There must be moments when you have different opinions for you 5 girls, right? What’s your tip to communicate with others peacefully?
SUN: Of course there are moments like that. When we can’t figure out a opinion, we’ll discuss that whose is the best, whose should be adopted. The best way is to be honest to each other, forgive each other and respect each other. Fortunately, we know each other very well that we know everyone’s common target is to do our best.
LIM: We don’t really have ‘real’ fights, we’ll learn to forgive each other.
YENNY: The best way is to consider in each other’s way.
SOHEE: Another way is to have meals together! Our choices for food are the same!

Q: How do you feel holding a world tour after 3 years?
YUBIN: We can finally hold a concert in Singapore! We’re very excited cuz we’ve been there a few times for different events in the past. We all love Chilli crabs, we’ll eat every time when we are there. Talking about Singapore, I’ll think of Singapore Sling and peanut too, ha! Moreover, I’m hoping to swim on top of the Marina Bay Sands.

The formula of success:
40% – A tailor-made dance song
It’s not accidental to be successful. Their road has been planned in detail in advance.
JYP planned a musical trilogy for the Wonder Girls just as they’ve made their debut. The first album in 2007, ‘The Wonder Years’ contains styles of the 80s from its names and songs. Not to mention that JYP produced the album by himself but some other Korean producers like Shinhwa’s Cheung Chun Ho, Kwon Tae Eun helped to produce different dance songs.
The title song ‘Tell Me’ stays with JYP’s ‘She was pretty’s Pop Disco movement and lead the heat of dance songs in Korea.
Afterwards, the 2nd project in 2008, ‘So Hot’ lets the Wonder Girls to be ‘Korea’s Little Sisters’. The 3rd project ‘Nobody’ even attacked overseas like a atom bomb. The repeating melody goes in everyone’s mind and be so unforgettable.
This method ‘keep repeating’ keep on to be using: ‘Like this yo like this’ which has been repeated for n times(That means many many times) in the new song ‘Like This’. With no doubt, it once again lets everyone to be dropped in Wonder Girls’ music.

40% – Cute retro dance moves
Policemen, prisoners in the Philippines…Everyone around the world, despite of ages, gender, skin color, religions, was attracted by the ‘Nobody’ virus. Everyone couldn’t wait to imitate and upload to Youtube.
The dance moves had a important impact on the group and the song’s success. It’s simple yet entertaining, simply using your fingers to move. You’re fed up of it? It’s okay, the next song, ’2 Different Tears’ and ‘Be My Baby’, let you continue to dance.
The recently released, ‘Like This’ though isn’t retro, but its American electron hip hop melody with its fun dance moves let people wants to stand up and dance.

20% – International influence
The song ‘Nobody’ ranked 76 on Billboard Hot 100 when they first reached the America. Billboard.com picked them as one of ’21 under 21′ (21 great people who are under 21) too. It lets them to step to be world-recognized.
Even they’ve been silent for a while, the CB song ‘Be My Baby’ MV views reached World’s 1st within 9days after its release. The song ‘Like Money’ gets major American websites’ critics’ nice reviews. These 5 girls are still fighting so hard to maintain their position of World singers.

It was by far one of the most physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally trying times of my life and I wanted to quit several times, but by God’s grace and strength I made it through!! I’m at AIT now in Ft. Jackson, SC so I’m not sure how regular my posts will be, but I’ll do my best to keep up with all the news. I’ve missed ya’ll and have really appreciated all of the support throughout this time!
